Published on 24/08/2018Tuyo Circus Arts provides both group and private classes for children and adults in a variety of circus skills such as Trapeze, Hoop, Silks, Partner Balance, and Tumbling.
They run a number of classes on various days throughout the week, and their website acts as the central location to find details of dates and times, as well as info on the different types of classes and the instructors running them.

Key Requirements
- Available classes should be clearly displayed, and allow visitors to filter different types of classes, or classes for different ages
- Each type of class should have a page on the site that displays info about the class, photos, and any upcoming classes
- Each instructor should have a profile on the site that can be easily updated, with text and images
- Classes should be arranged in "blocks" with a variable number of classes per block
- A price should be shown per-block and per-class
- Tuyo may want to add online bookings in the future, so the website should be built with this in mind
- There should be a contact page with a contact form and info on how to find the venue
- Visitors should be able to sign up to the mailing list, and choose the types of classes they are interested in
Filterable Classes Table
To allow customers to easily find details of the classes they'd like to attend, class listings are shown in a table which allows filtering by activity, frequency, age group, or instructor. Multiple filters can be selected at once, and selected filters are displayed above the class list.
Selecting "youth classes" allows the option to input the age of the child to further filter to appropriate classes.
Admin area
Members of staff are able to log in to an admin area, that allows them to manage class type and instructor details, as well as add and update available class blocks/dates.
The admin area is straightforwards and easy to use, with clear links to key sections.
Class Type & Instructor Management
The admin area features a consistent approach to managing both class type and instructor pages for maximum ease of use.
The pages feature a number of sections of text for display on the page, including a word-style "WYSIWYG" editor for the main description which allows formatting such as bold, italic, hyperlinks, bullet points, etc.
Page admins are also able to select from a number of options for the page's header image, as well as upload gallery images to be displayed on the page.
When logged-in, admins also see a button to edit the page whilst browsing the site, so they have quick access to make edits to each page as needed.
Class & Date Management
Classes are organised into "blocks" with a flexible length, allowing these to be monthly, termly, two-monthly, etc.
When creating a block, admins can choose from any class-type, and set details such as day of week, minimum and maximum attendee age, and experience level. There are also a number of optional fields such as title, which are filled with defaults if not filled in.
If applicable, a discounted price for the entire block can also be added. Otherwise, the price of each class is automatically totalled to give the block price.
To speed up adding classes to the block, there is a "Block defaults" section. Any values set here are automatically set on each new class added, but can be overridden as needed. Once the first class has been added and a date selected, subsequent classes are automatically set to a week afterwards, as most classes run weekly - but this date can be changed as needed. There is also an option to add a "no class notice" on a particular date, to make it clear if there is gap within a block.
Mailing-list management via Mailchimp
Originally, Tuyo managed their mailing list manually as a list of email addresses, and sent out their updates as a standard email. As part of building the new site, we set up mailing lists via Mailchimp - this allows for subscribes and unsubscribes to be managed automatically, and also for subscribers to be grouped according to their preferences, which saves a lot of admin.
All emails sent out also make use of a custom-built template featuring Tuyo's branding, for a more professional look and feel, and easy access to relevant info such as directions to the venue.
Customers can sign-up to the mailing list via the website, which utilises Mailchimp's API to save new subscribers' details straight to the mailing list, along with their selections as to the types of classes they'd like to hear about.
